A little context

For nine years I have worked at the point where earth observation meets public policy — currently as Senior Research Officer at icddr,b, building cholera outbreak-risk prediction and early warning systems under a Wellcome Trust grant. Before that I supported IOM's Risk Index for Climate Displacement at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, and delivered SERVIR-HKH services in Bangladesh with ICIMOD.

What makes the work useful is that it does not stop at the analysis. I build the web application that puts it in front of decision-makers, and I design the atlas that goes into the report. Most people in this field do one of those three things.

Two MSc degrees — Computer Science and Engineering, and Geography and Environment — which is the short explanation for why I can both model it and build it.

I work on flood and disaster risk, climate vulnerability and displacement, air quality and urban heat, land use change, spatial epidemiology and agricultural suitability. Open to remote consulting and full-time remote roles with research institutions, UN agencies and geospatial technology companies.

What I take on

Most GIS freelancers hand you a shapefile. Most web developers cannot read a raster. These are the pieces I do from one contract.

Land use and land cover

Classification and change detection over time

Disaster risk mapping

Flood, landslide and cyclone risk, including Sentinel-1 SAR

Google Earth Engine

Scripting and automation of repeatable exports

Interactive WebGIS

Dashboards in Leaflet, OpenLayers, GeoServer and PostGIS

Air quality and urban heat

Satellite-observed pollutants and land surface temperature

Spatial machine learning

Predictive modelling and early-warning systems

Cartography and atlas design

Publication-grade maps for print and report

How I work

1

Understand the question

A map is only useful if it answers something specific. We start with the decision the map has to support, not with the data.

2

Get the data honest

Sources are named, gaps are stated, and nothing is smoothed into looking more certain than it is.

3

Build it to be used

Fast on a slow connection, readable on a phone, and structured so someone who has never seen it can find their way.

4

Make it worth opening

Cartography and layout are not decoration. They are what decides whether the work gets read at all.
